To curse a treasure, the witchdoctor has to be in the presence of the treasure and it has to be buried within a few days – the lore is unclear about how long but it seems to be less than a week.
To curse an individual, the witchdoctor must be in possesion of a physical item cherished by the target.
Breaking a curse is more difficult. There’s usually a very specicic way to undo its effects and it depends on who the witchdoctor was.
Revenge curse
Revenge curses are the most common types of curses but also the most difficult to identify. A revenge curse brings bad luck to the target, but it’s always a challenge to know if someone is cursed or just unlucky.
To break a revenge curse the target must have a witchdoctor perform a “cleansing” blessing by saying “Forgive! Cleanse!” while breaking a personal item of the curse perpetrator in two.
Blood curse
Blood curses are death curses. They are only used by desperate people; the blood of someone is enchanted to power the curse and that person had to give up years of their life to the curse. However the effects are very powerful – and whoever is on the wrong end of the curse can expect a painful death caused by an “act of god” – lore tells us of tidal waves swallowing the target’s ship or sudden lightning storms forming and the target being struck by lightning.
To break a blood curse, the target must write a specific phrase on a piece of paper, then burn it.
Dark Night curse
A dark night curse causes the target to have vivid, recurring nightmares. It might not sound so bad, but it eventually causes the victim to be sleep-deprived and eventually go insane.
There’s no easy way to break a dark night curse. The target must confront their darkest fear in dream and defeat it.
Red Mask curse
Named after the ceremonial garb used during the initial incantation, a red mask curse causes the victim to slowly lose its memories.
To break a red mask curse, the target must find the witchdoctor who performed the curse and have them perform the “antidote” ritual. Killing the witchdoctor is also rumored to break the curse.
